Christina was born and raised in Thessaloniki, a big city in Greece. Growing up she would come to spend much time in Trikala a village in Greece, with her grandparents who were raised with strong Christian Orthodox values. Greek families have a tradition of baptising their children and giving them names that originate from the bible hence Christina from ‘Ιησούς Χριστός’ Jesus Christ. Her grandfather, as of many men of his generation, wanted his grandchild to be a son and named after himself ‘Christos’, but he ended up with four female grandchildren whom he eventually accepted.

  “Whenever I had to visit my grandparents, I was not allowed to hang out with boys or talk about any provocative subjects. Still to this day, whenever I visit them I have to dress more conservatively with my breasts covered which is crazy considering my life in London. Complete opposite worlds.”

In this project, Christina breaks the Greek cultural norms of her grandparent’s village and shows her rebellious side by posing naked in a traditional setting. The naked body represents our generation’s break of traditional values, defying religious and patriarchal morals and creating something new of their own.
